Why CTC is NOT Your Take-Home Salary
A common shock for professionals in India is the sheer difference between their offered Cost to Company (CTC) and the actual amount credited to their bank account at the month's end. CTC represents what the company spends on you, not what you get to spend.
Key Components of Your Salary Structure
- Basic Salary: Usually forms 40-50% of your CTC. This is the foundation upon which PF and Gratuity are calculated. It is fully taxable.
- HRA (House Rent Allowance): Provided to meet accommodation expenses. Offers tax benefits if you live in a rented house under the Old Tax Regime.
- Special/Variable Pay: Often used to balance the CTC. Usually fully taxable.
- Employer PF: Your employer's contribution to your Provident Fund (12% of Basic). It is part of your CTC but goes straight to your retirement corpus, not your bank account.
- Gratuity: A lump sum payout available after 5 years of continuous service. Employers deduct around 4.81% of Basic from your CTC yearly to fund this.
Common Deductions
- Employee PF: Your own contribution to PF (12% of Basic), deducted from your gross salary.
- Professional Tax (PT): A state-level tax (ranging from ₹150 to ₹200 per month).
- TDS (Tax Deducted at Source): The income tax your employer deducts based on your projected annual income and declared investments.
Illustrative ₹10 LPA Salary Example
Note: This is an illustrative salary structure, not a universal guarantee. Actual take-home depends strictly on your employer's specific structure, your chosen tax regime, and your declared deductions.
| Component | Yearly Amount (₹) | Monthly Amount (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Total CTC | 10,00,000 | 83,333 |
| Minus Company Contributions (Not in hand): | ||
| Employer PF (12% of Basic) | 48,000 | 4,000 |
| Gratuity Contribution | 19,200 | 1,600 |
| Gross Salary | 9,32,800 | 77,733 |
| Minus Employee Deductions: | ||
| Employee PF (12% of Basic) | 48,000 | 4,000 |
| Professional Tax | 2,400 | 200 |
| TDS (Est. under New Regime) | ~ 42,000 | ~ 3,500 |
| Estimated Take-Home | ~ 8,40,400 | ~ 70,033 |
As you can see, a ₹83k/month CTC might result in a ₹70k/month take-home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I opt out of PF to increase my take-home salary?
A: If your basic salary is above ₹15,000/month and you have never been an EPF member before, you can choose not to join (subject to employer policy). However, if you are already a member, PF deduction is mandatory.
