Understanding GST in India

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, operating on a "One Nation, One Tax" philosophy.

GST Tax Slabs & Variations

Standard GST slabs are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. However, these rates are not universal. Essential items like basic food grains are exempt (0%), while luxury goods or sin goods attract 28% plus additional cess. Always verify the current rate applicable to your specific product/service using its HSN/SAC code.

How to Calculate GST

1. Adding GST (Exclusive Price)

When the price is given without GST, and you need to add it:

  • GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
  • Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

2. Extracting GST (Inclusive Price)

When the price already includes GST (like the MRP of a laptop), and you need to find the base value:

  • Base Price = (Total Price × 100) / (100 + GST Rate)
  • GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

CGST, SGST, and IGST

How GST is split depends on whether the transaction crosses state borders.

  • Intra-state (Within the same state): GST is divided equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). Example: An 18% tax becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • Inter-state (Between two different states): A single IGST (Integrated GST) is charged. Example: Full 18% IGST.

Input Tax Credit (ITC) and RCM

ITC: Businesses can claim credit for the GST they paid on purchases against the GST they collect on sales. This prevents the cascading "tax-on-tax" effect.

RCM (Reverse Charge Mechanism): Usually, the supplier collects and pays GST. Under RCM, the buyer is legally responsible for depositing the tax directly to the government (common in freight transport and legal services).

Frequently Asked Questions
